Based in Madagascar and France, the company created in 2004 is committed to providing high quality organic and conventional essential oils from environmental and human friendly supply chains.

"We bring together players in small-scale agriculture in associations and co-operatives. We thus participate in improving their living conditions and we act together to protect the great biodiversity of Madagascar," explains Matthieu Richard, co-founder of Jacarandas International.

Ylang-ylang and much more

Jacarandas is renowned for its essence of ylang-ylang, cultivated on their 50 hectare farm in Nosy Be. The company also supplies a wide variety of essential oils of Malagasy origin, including cinnamon, eucalyptus, geranium, fresh ginger, clove leaf, clove bud, helichrysum, niaouli, and black pepper oils.

The raw materials are produced by the network of farmers developed by the company then processed in their our factory located in Toamasina, home to Madagascar’s main port for exports on the island’s eastern coast.

Jacarandas strives to establish certified farm supply chains. They are committed to supporting local communities in their development, by training them in farming techniques, but also in health, hygiene, and the preservation of biodiversity. The company is also encouraging the creation of associations that will then evolve into autonomous cooperatives.

“Our aim is to offer high-quality products from a sustainable supply chain. It’s a real day-to-day adventure, where we have to deal with multiple stakeholders, each with their own specific characteristics and requirements,” highlights Matthieu Richard.

Rampant deforestation

One of the company’s key environmental endeavours is to combat rampant deforestation.

“Every year we replant around 70,000 producer plants (cinnamon, clove, citriodora, etc.), and we make sure that year after year they become trees that will revegetate the country and provide a source of income for the farmers. Furthermore, we are distributing thousands of young Acacia Mangium saplings, a fast-growing species, to Nosy Be producers, enabling them to carry out forestry by selling wood from sustainable plantations,” continues the co-founder of Jacarandas.

Many of the company’s programs are co-developed with NGOs or international bodies who bring their expertise in the social, health or education fields.

“In addition to the requirements of the Fair Life and Fair for Life specifications, we have implemented an internal control system throughout the year, reinforced by the participation of consultants, who support us in various sectors. This system enables us to rigorously and continuously monitor our practices, ensuring compliance with biodiversity standards, human rights and fair relations with our producer partners,” adds Matthieu Richard.

In order to push these ambitions forward and to ensure their actions are consistent with the challenges we face, Jacarandas aspires to a long-term commitment from its customers. "It is essential to rethink customer-supplier relations in terms of partnerships over several years," concludes Matthieu Richard.

Pink peppercorn

Jacarandas will showcase their iconic ingredients at the World Perfumery Congress (WPC) from June 24-27, 2024 in Geneva, Switzerland, alongside six other independent producers and suppliers of natural perfumery ingredients united in a common stand under the “Naturals Corner” banner.

Within its wide portfolio of natural raw materials, Jacarandas will showcase a new Fair Life and Fair for Life certified pink peppercorn harvested in the South of Madagascar and offering spicy and floral notes.
